A £32 million restoration job has almost come to an end, and the ornate plasterwork and barrel vaulted ceilings are amongst the final touches before carpets are laid and contractors start to move out. We are applying finishing touches to lime plasterwork over the next weeks...

The original barrel vaults were preserved, and new entrances prepared which run at right angles to them - in these photos we are forming the arches with steel mesh and applying hydraulic lime plaster which allows the structure to move with the building. Several coats will be applied, gradually building up the strength, thickness and shape of the vaults, after which a finishing coat and limewash.
