A Shropshire farmhouse...

The stairwell and entrance...

The entire south 'wing' was stripped and re-carcassed during 2002, as the following photos show. Every oak beam removed was put back, with the exception of a 1940's oak staircase which had been stripped out of nearby Badger Hall and was dangerously unsafe. All carpentry, oak framing, plastering, plumbing and electrical work was carried out by our own team of specialised tradesmen.

Typical floor joists - these were the bathroom floor! Staircase from Hell...

The original staircase - twisting and precarious Like working in an old castle...!

The new staircase was designed to lead upwards from a new front door, placed at the base of the gable end, instead of the old door which entered from one side of the gable. A half landing leads left to the rest of the house, and right to the third floor guest suite.

All that remained was to fit oak panelling to the hallway, and complete the new rooms created by installing the staircase:

The finished product...

Note the cabinet formed into the stone wall to left of staircase. This holds the large collection of relics dating to the bronze age that have been found on-site during the building work.
